Whitley Bay Reach 3rd Consecutive FA Vase Final

Whitley Bay will attempt to secure a place in football history in May when they meet Coalville Town in the 2011 FA Vase Final. Winners in 2009 & 2010 now the Bay hope to make it 3 on the bounce, a feat never achieved in the competitions history.

They reached the final with an emphatic 5-2 aggregate victory over Poole Town winning the away leg 2-1 thanks to two very late goals, and they completed the job thanks to a Paul Chow  hat-trick. It could have been very different had the Dorset side mamaged to keep their composure better, as they led in both games in the early stages, however Whitley Bay have shown a never say die attitude and they will go to Wembley as justifiable favourites, and we expect them to complete their historic treble.

Final Score 3-1 and 5-2 on aggregate

Coalville Town have reached their 1st ever FA Vase Final after a resounding aggregate win over the strongly fancied Kings Lynn Town.

Callum Woodward, Jerome Murdock and Matt Gardener all scored for Coalville in their second leg away tie as they grabbed a 3-2 win to make the final score 6-2 on aggregate.

Robbie Harris second-two for Kings Lynn in the second half  to put a little respectability on the score sheet however they will have to be content with a solid crowd of 2,345 offering some compensation for missing out on Wembley.

Coalville will now face Whitley Bay in the Final, who are bidding for an unprecedented 3rd consecutive win.

King’s Lynn hero in fitness battle

King’s Lynn talisman Steve Spriggs is battling to overcome a viral infection to feature in tomorrow’s landmark FA Vase fifth round home tie against UCL title rivals St Neots at The Walks.

Spriggs’ hat-trick helped Town inflict a first league defeat of the season on the leaders in last weekend’s 4-2 away win, but the wide player was a key absentee in the disappointing midweek draw at Cogenhoe.

The former FA Vase finalist admits he is desperate to feature in the biggest game of Town’s new era with a place in the last eight of the national competition at stake.

“I’m touch and go for Saturday, but I think I’ll be alright,” said Spriggs. “I’ve had a bit of a stomach bug and a viral infection – I think just through work I may have picked something up and it has left me quite weak and feeling very tired. I felt a lot better on Wednesday than I did the day before so hopefully that continues. I really want to get myself fit, but I won’t turn up Saturday and play if I feel I’ll let the lads down. You have to be closer to 100% fit than 50% for these types of game. If I don’t play, then I’ll definitely be there to support the boys.

“It will be the biggest crowd of the year and an occasion you want to be part of. We had a chat amongst the lads at training last week before the away game in the league and thought we would take 500 or 600 to St Neots. To get 900-odd just shows how big the club is. The fan base is fantastic. Even when we were 2-1 down, there was non stop singing and it does inspire the boys to give that little bit extra.”

Spriggs echoed joint boss Gary Setchell’s sentiments after Town failed to follow up with another league win at Cogenhoe.

“What Setch said was spot on. You don’t win leagues at St Neots, you win them at places like Cogenhoe, with all due respect to them,” he said. “From what I’ve heard and the chances we missed it is two points dropped but over the week we have gained a point on St Neots which is a plus point. They still have to come to our place and there is still a long way to go in the season. We have to stay positive and keep grinding out the results and I still feel we have a chance of getting promoted this year.”

Town missed Spriggs’ attacking verve on Tuesday after taking his tally to 16 goals in 28 appearances with his starring role at St Neots.

“I think the way we play suits me but to score at better than one in two, well, I’m quite happy with that at the moment,” he said. “It’s important we have lads chipping in around Jack (Defty) because to score 32 at whatever level is phenomenal. Honestly, if I had put all my chances away I could have had six but on a personal level to get a hat-trick in a game of that size was really pleasing.

“We prepared right and we did everything right. Norton away in the FA Vase was a big game but that was obviously the biggest we have had this season. Going into that game we knew if they won that put them seven points clear. They haven’t dropped many points so far so it would have been a big ask to pull that back.”

• King’s Lynn’s ticket office will be open between 5pm and 7pm at The Walks today for supporters looking to purchase tickets in advance for tomorrow’s FA Vase fifth round tie. Turnstiles will be open from 1pm on matchday. Club officials are advising supporters to arrive early at the ground for a match that is set to attract the largest attendance since the club was re-launched last year.

Lynn must overcome the Sussex-based side to reach the last four following Saturday’s historic win over UCL title rivals St Neots in front of more than 1,600 fans at The Walks.

The Quarterboys beat Leverstock Green to clinch a quarter-final place but their pending trip to Norfolk is United’s seventh away draw in eight rounds of this season’s competition.

“It’s amazing. I’m over the moon with a home draw,” said Chapman. “That is a brilliant result for us and let’s hope we can do the same again. I’m not looking beyond the next game. I would never do that so we’ll just keep our heads down and keep working at it. It’s so exciting for everyone at the minute. I hope people will come along and support us again.

“I’m really enjoying it. I never thought I would become so involved with football. It felt fantastic at the final whistle (on Saturday). I was so proud. I looked at Boony (Kevin) and Setch (Gary Setchell) and all the hard work they have put in and the players and everyone else. There’s been plenty of early starts and late nights getting the stadium ready over these past few months and its all worth it for days like that and the crowd played their part. The noise in the second half was unreal and it drove us on.”

Joint boss Boon is predicting another memorable occasion against the Sussex County League Division One side.

“It is one of the best draws we could have got looking at the teams left in but that doesn’t mean we take anything for granted,” he said. “We know how tough it will be and any side who has got through to this stage of the competition deserve respect. At home we have to be confident and we know that if we can win it guarantees us another home tie in the semi-final as it’s played over two legs.

“We are a good side at home. We proved that again over the weekend and I know it will be a fantastic day. I honestly feel we can aim for a 2,000 or 2,500 crowd because it won’t just be supporters and people from the town but the surrounding villages and the whole area. Any young aspiring footballers can come along and see just what it means to get this far in a national competition.”

Boon admits Town have to get back to business quickly after the euphoria of completing a league and cup double over the Saints.

“For me and Setch and the players we have to let everybody else got on with it, put it on the back burner and focus on the games between now and then,” he said. “We’re still going strong in two other cups and the league is a priority as we have maintained all along. I’m just pleased for the people behind-the-scenes and Buster and his family who have put so much effort and money in to build the club up and get us to this point. The supporters are guaranteed another great occasion.”

In other ties, holders Whitley Bay face a Northern League derby at Dunston whilst Ridgeons Premier Division title contenders Leiston travel to Midlands outfit Coalville. Highly-fancied Poole entertain Torpoint in the final last eight tie.

Full FA Vase quarter-final draw

Poole v Torpoint, Coalville v Leiston, King’s Lynn v Rye United, Dunston v Whitley Bay.

Ties to be played Saturday, March 5. The winners of the quarter-final ties earn £1,500 in prize money.

King’s Lynn bosses bullish over FA Vase chances

King's Lynn joint boss Kevin Boon and skipper Jack Defty savour Town's 2-1 FA Vase fifth round success over St Neots. Picture: Matthew Usher.

King’s Lynn management team Kevin Boon and Gary Setchell are adamant the Linnets can go all the way to Wembley after beating league rivals St Neots to clinch an FA Vase quarter-final spot.

Town captain Jack Defty and Robbie Harris fired the Norfolk side into the last eight in front of more than 1,600 fans at The Walks.

Lynn now head into today’s FA draw as newly-installed second favourites to lift the prestigious national trophy.

“Give us a home draw, we’ll beat anybody at home and then we are two games from the final,” said Setchell. “We honestly haven’t talked about Wembley because our draws have been so hard to this point. It has never been a case of, ‘We’ve got so and so,’ and thinking the quarter-final or the semi-final is there for us. We’ve been to Beckenham away, Norton away and now had St Neots at home so we could never look forward. We’ve always been up against it but with a home draw I think we can go all the way because we haven’t just won a last 16 tie here. We’ve beaten one of the favourites and the biggest spenders with the likes of an ex-Premier League player in their ranks.”

Fellow joint boss Boon helped end the previous club’s 50 year wait for a title and believes Town’s collective strength is their greatest asset.

“For me, it was brilliant to see the celebrations at the full time whistle,” he said. “Watching all those fans in the ground and for the players to go around and take the applause from every corner. They stayed and cheered the boys off and are a massive part of it. Hopefully we get a home draw and we can have even more here in the next round.”

Lynn now face a congested end to the season with Town facing another week of cup fixtures. Thetford visit The Walks in the Norfolk Senior Cup semi-final tomorrow with the Linnets also in League Cup action this weekend.

“Supporters and everyone connected to the club has to understand we can’t flog these players. We will have to make changes,” said Setchell. “If Jack played every game to the end of the season he would end up playing about 65. He wouldn’t be able to perform if we got to an FA Vase semi-final. The league is still the priority, then FA Vase, then Norfolk Senior Cup if it comes along and then the League Cup. We’ll send out a team to win these two games, but we can’t over exert ourselves. It would be criminal if Jack or Jamie or Luke Thurlbourne injured themselves in a League Cup tie.”

Boon revealed Town’s management also plan to step up their search for fresh blood with the club still competing on four fronts.

“We have to bring a player or two in,” he said. “But we have to bring in better than what we have already and they can’t be cup tied. We have looked at one or two already, but after this performance it would be hard to find better when myself and Setch do sit down and talk about it again.”

FA VASE FIFTH ROUND

King’s Lynn Town 2 (Defty 52, Harris 64)

St Neots Town 1 (Webb pen 60)

SAINTS’ interest in this season’s FA Vase came to an end on Saturday following a narrow defeat against their United Counties League title rivals.

Jack Defty and Robbie Harris found the net for the Linnets either side of a Lewis Webb penalty for the visitors in front of 1,612 at the Walks.

This defeat for Neots came just a week after their painful 4-2 league reverse at the Hunts Post Community Stadium but, with promotion the priority this season, the loss is unlikely to be one they will dwell on for long.

Tim Trebes retained the number one jersey, while the versatile Micky Hyem slotted into midfield in place of Junior Kanuda, who was only fit enough for the bench.

Chances came and went in a scoreless first half – Shane Tolley and Lewis Hilliard both wasteful in front of goal – before Lynn seized the initiative seven minutes after the re-start.

An uncharacteristic error by Will Fordham led to the goal, as he misjudged a tackle on Chris Bacon on the bye-line.

And there waiting to take full advantage was the predatory Defty, who stabbed the resultant cross into the net from close range.

Neots then levelled eight minutes later through Webb from the spot, after Ross Watson’s challenge on Dan Jacob inside the box.

But they were back on level terms for just four minutes as sub Robbie Harris – who had just replaced last weekend’s hat-trick hero Stephen Spriggs – shot home through a packed penalty area from a Jamie Thurlbourne corner with his first touch.

On as a last throw of the dice, Saints sub Roy Essandoh wasted a glorious chance to send the game into extra time on 82 minutes, when his effort was smothered on the line by Luke Thurlbourne.

It was the second time that St Neots have bowed out of the competition at this stage, having also reached the last 16 back in 2001/02, when they were beaten 2-0 at Durham City.

St Neots: Trebes, D Moore, Davis, Webb, Fuff, Fordham, Hilliard (Scully 56), Hyem (Essandoh 81), S Moore, Tolley (Kanuda 73), Jacob.

Subs not used: Gent, McShane.

Whitley Bay March On In FA Vase With Big Win

Poole Town F.C.

Image via Wikipedia

Whitley Bay who have won the last 2 FA Vase Finals took a massive step towards a historic treble as they marched into the quarter finals with a comfortable 5-1 win over Dunstable Town. They were trailing 1-0 to Dubstable at half time and it took until the 57th minute for the holders to level the scores. Thereafter further goals from Chow & Robinson soon had the game back under Whitley’s control and a late capitulation which saw Kerr add to his opener and Kerr grab his second both in injury made the score more emphatic.

Whitley Bay are now favourites to lift the trophy closely followed in the betting by Kings Lynn who had a big win over local rivals St Neots Town, and Poole Town who pulled off the result of the round in beating Spennymoor Town 3-2.

Coalville Town finally won through with 2 goals in extra time in their 3-1 win over Holbrook Sports.

The FA Vase Quarter Finalists are:

Whitley Bay

Kings Lynn

Poole Town

Torpoint Athletic

Kings Lynn Beat Local Rivals St Neots Town in FA Vase Fifth Round

Kings Lynn pulled off an impressive 2-1 win over St Neots Town to advance to the quarter finals of the 2011 FA Vase competition.

The game was exciting and close as would be expected given this was a local East Anglian match up and the fact they are 1st and second in the United Counties Premier League. The leaders St Neots had just the better of the early possession and Stefan Moore missed a great chance when clean through and only some quick thinking by Kings Lynn goalkeeper Alex Street kept the score blank.

St Neots had the best of the second half, however after the break Kings Lynn started to get into the game and it was no surprise when Jack Defty bundled the ball home to make the score 1-0. The visitors had looked the better side rallied though and they leveled soon afterwards from the penalty spot. The game was decided by a goalkeeping error which Robbie Harris pounced upon to make the scores 2-1 ensuring it was Kings Lynn who were the pride of East Anglia on the day and they will collect the £1,300 chq from the ‘s prize fund.

The attendance was 1,641; Kings Lynn highest for many years.
