The FA Cup was suspended between 1940 & 1945 however the The Football League introduced a War Cup competition in an attempt to fill the gap in English Football this created.
The first two finals were played at Wembley in the traditional manner of the FA Cup however in 1942 the final switched to a two-legged format.
This changed again for the final three competitions which was split into North and South sections, with the winner of each competing in a North v South play-off final to decide who got the Cup. The Northern cup winners were decided over two legs, while the Southern finalists met in a one-off Wembley final.
In 1944 Charlton and Villa shared the trophy when the final ended 1-1. This was due to transport restrictions meaning a replay not an option.
