Crawley Town Bow Out To A Well Below Par Manchester United

When top of the Premier League meets near top of the Conference at home one could be forgiven for expecting a deluge of goals, however this was a very different Manchester United side and Crawley came within a few inches of a remarkable replay.

Given that this seasons FA Cup crowds have been a little disapointing it was nice to see 74,778 turn up for this one, although many especially those decked out in Red might have considered asking for a refund when they saw the team Manchester United put out, probably due to the their forthcoming European games.

The game itself was not a great spectical and surprisingly it was Crawley who had more possession and chances, and despite falling behind to Wes Brown’s 28th minute goal showed plenty of ambition. Such was their efforts that it forced Sir Alex to rejig his team at half time bringing on Wayne Rooney and latter Chris Smalling and Darren Fletcher to add a little more bite to the team which had 9 changed from that that had beaten Manchester Citya week earlier.

Crawley also made some changes as they threw caution to the wind and went in search of an equaliser.  This bold move nearly got them a reward as Hunt and Tubbs both went close befort Second Half Substiture Brodie hit the cross bar. But is was not to be their day, however they left Old Trafford with their heads held high and received generous applause from all sections of the crowd.

Overall a win for the big boys, but again a sad reflection on the declining status of the FA Cup with Manchester United prepared to risk humiliation rather than their stars. Crawley on this display will win the Conference title, so playing League Football next season, and with their financial resources they could be in League One the season after.

Everton Give Ancelotti The Blues With FA Cup Shock

The future of Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti must now be in doubt after Everton pulled off a shock penalties win at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup 4th Round. In a slightly disappointing game from a neutrals perspective and one littered with Everton fouls Chelsea looked the more likely to win, however after taking the lead in extra time through Frank Lampard they were pegged back by Leighton Baines 119th minute free kick meaning it was Penalties.

Ashley Cole missed the decisive spot kick with the score at 3-3 leaving veteran defender Phil Neville to take the glory as Everton won at Chelsea  for the 1st time since 1994. They now play Reading in the 5th round and after this win they must think their name is on the cup.

Chelsea who were trying to become the first side in 125 years to win three consecutive FA Cups, now know their season could effectively be over if they lose in Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg away to FC Copenhagen. They can probably expect a less brutal confrontation though and a good result might just keep Ancelotti in a job until the end of the season. With Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich not keen on failure nothing short of the Champions League title will ensure he is manager going into the 2012 season.

Final Score Chelsea 1-1 Everton (Everton 4-3 on Penalties)

Attendance 41,113

Tickets prices soar for Champions League final

LONDON (AP)—Going to the Champions League final will cost almost twice as much as two years ago for some fans.

For the May 28 final at Wembley Stadium in London, a category three ticket will cost ?175 ($ 235) compared with ?90 ($ 120) in 2009. The same ticket in Madrid last year to see Inter Milan beat Bayern Munich cost ?155.

The price of the second-most expensive ticket has risen by around 85 percent from ?140 in 2009 to ?260. Category one tickets, which will cost ?350, have risen ?50 for each of the last two finals.

On top of buying the ticket, fans will also have to pay an administration fee of ?31 ($ 40) for sales within Europe.

“This is the market price,” UEFA competitions director Giorgio Marchetti said at the ticket launch in London. “Do you think we would have trouble filling Wembley if the prices were higher? You think it would be different?

“We try to strike a balance between the interest of the supporters and the interest of the event. Why should we price the tickets lower than what we think is a fair level?”

UEFA expect income from the Champions League final to reach ?16.7 million, compared with ?11.5 million last year.

“The prices are based on the type of event and when you compare it to other events we don’t think that the Champions League final is overpriced,” Marchetti said. “We do not want to squeeze every single penny out of the market. We have to benchmark this event against other comparable events, like for example the final of the Euros and the World Cup.

“Last year there was already a significant increase compared to the previous editions but it’s nothing to do with being in London and it is still priced below comparable events.”

Each of the Champions League finalists receive 25,000 tickets after 11,000 have been on open sale from Feb. 24 to March 18.

The cheapest seats, which are sold only by the finalists, are ?95, compared with ?90 in 2010 and ?70 in Rome in 2009.

UEFA president Michel Platini has moved European club football’s biggest final from Wednesdays to Saturdays to attract more younger fans.

King’s Lynn bosses bullish over FA Vase chances

King's Lynn joint boss Kevin Boon and skipper Jack Defty savour Town's 2-1 FA Vase fifth round success over St Neots. Picture: Matthew Usher.

King’s Lynn management team Kevin Boon and Gary Setchell are adamant the Linnets can go all the way to Wembley after beating league rivals St Neots to clinch an FA Vase quarter-final spot.

Town captain Jack Defty and Robbie Harris fired the Norfolk side into the last eight in front of more than 1,600 fans at The Walks.

Lynn now head into today’s FA draw as newly-installed second favourites to lift the prestigious national trophy.

“Give us a home draw, we’ll beat anybody at home and then we are two games from the final,” said Setchell. “We honestly haven’t talked about Wembley because our draws have been so hard to this point. It has never been a case of, ‘We’ve got so and so,’ and thinking the quarter-final or the semi-final is there for us. We’ve been to Beckenham away, Norton away and now had St Neots at home so we could never look forward. We’ve always been up against it but with a home draw I think we can go all the way because we haven’t just won a last 16 tie here. We’ve beaten one of the favourites and the biggest spenders with the likes of an ex-Premier League player in their ranks.”

Fellow joint boss Boon helped end the previous club’s 50 year wait for a title and believes Town’s collective strength is their greatest asset.

“For me, it was brilliant to see the celebrations at the full time whistle,” he said. “Watching all those fans in the ground and for the players to go around and take the applause from every corner. They stayed and cheered the boys off and are a massive part of it. Hopefully we get a home draw and we can have even more here in the next round.”

Lynn now face a congested end to the season with Town facing another week of cup fixtures. Thetford visit The Walks in the Norfolk Senior Cup semi-final tomorrow with the Linnets also in League Cup action this weekend.

“Supporters and everyone connected to the club has to understand we can’t flog these players. We will have to make changes,” said Setchell. “If Jack played every game to the end of the season he would end up playing about 65. He wouldn’t be able to perform if we got to an FA Vase semi-final. The league is still the priority, then FA Vase, then Norfolk Senior Cup if it comes along and then the League Cup. We’ll send out a team to win these two games, but we can’t over exert ourselves. It would be criminal if Jack or Jamie or Luke Thurlbourne injured themselves in a League Cup tie.”

Boon revealed Town’s management also plan to step up their search for fresh blood with the club still competing on four fronts.

“We have to bring a player or two in,” he said. “But we have to bring in better than what we have already and they can’t be cup tied. We have looked at one or two already, but after this performance it would be hard to find better when myself and Setch do sit down and talk about it again.”
