Manchester United & Bolton Both Advance To The FA Cup Semi Final

Both of Saturdays FA Cup quarter finals were decided without replays as Bolton struck a late winner to beat League Cup Winners Birmingham 3-2 at St Andrews. Birmingham had just the better of the play, but just as it looked like a replay was beckoning Chung-Yong Lee hit the winner to send the home fans slightly aggrieved. The Attendance was a slightly disapointing 23,699.

Manchester United faced Arsenal in the tie of the round and Arsenals season continued to unravel big style as they were eliminated from their 3rd Cup competition in as many weeks, despite United starting with a somewhat unconventional line up which included 7 defenders. Despite having the better of the chances and possession Arsenal never looked like getting back into the game after going 1-0 down mid way through the 1st half and when Wayne Rooney popped up with their second 5 minutes into the second half the game was as good as over. Arsenal have now been knocked out of the Champions League and FA Cup and lost to Birmingham in the League Cup Final, leaving only the Premier League title for them to try and end their barren silver ware run. Darlington Come From Behind To Win FA Trophy Semi 1st Leg

Darlington F.C.

Darlington battled back from 2-0 down to take a 3-2 lead in the first leg of the FA Trophy semi-final thanks to Liam Hatch who scored two late goals.

In a slow opening, not helped by the poor pitch Gateshead settled better and  Nathan Fisher scored the opener for them on 21 minutes with a low drive, and Adam Rundle doubled their advantage just before half time sending the Tynesiders in for the break in good spirits. However the second half belonged to Darlington and ex Carlisle United player Marc Bridge-Wilkinson pulled one back on 53 minutes before Hatch hit his brace which means its advantage Darlington going into the second leg.

The final score:

Darlington 3-2 Gateshead

Attendance: 4,243

Tottenham Through to Champions League Last 8

Tottenham held AC Milan 0-0 at White Hart Lane to progress 1-0 on aggregate in the Champions League. In a nervy game AC looked the better team and had enough chances in the first half where they laid siege to the Spurs goal to overturn the tie.

Tottenham were a bit better in the second half but again it was Milan who remained the more threatening and the home contingent in the 34,320 crowd were mighty relieved to hear the final whistle.

Spurs will now have to wait until the 18 March to find out who they will face and what ever happens they can look back on a successful first excursion in the competition.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, is the first English manager to take an English side to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, and his resume will now read victories over both Milan giants as they beat holders Inter Milan in the group stages.

Mansfield Through to FA Trophy Semi Final

Mansfield Town beat their lower league rivals Chasetown 3-1 to progress to the Semi Final of the 2011 FA Trophy.

Adam Murray put the Stags 1-0 up after 35 minutes, however Chasetown never gave up and despite being under a lot of pressure managed to equalise in the 54th minute. Their faint hopes only lasted until the 56th minute though as Briscoe restored Mansfields lead before Mitchleyadded a third for the Stags in the 76th.

Overall Mansfield wer clearly the better team and with 20 shots at goal arguably could have won more comprehensively.

The attendance was 2,295 swelled by 525 Chasetown fans who made the difficult midweek journey.
