In 2009 Wolfsberg were Bundesliga champions and after leaving FC Twente on a high after delivering them the Dutch title one could have expected Steve McClarin to go on to great things with Wolfsberg. However things are not going according to the script as Bundesligaas two side Energie Cottbus emphatically knocked Wolfsburg out of the German Cup in their own stadium.
Things began badly as Niles Petersen to put the visitors ahead from a corner in the 1st minute and things continued to go down hill as Jiayi Shao doubled Cottbus’ advantage on 40 minutes. Petersen scored his second just before half time to complete an embarrassing fiirst half for Wolfsberg.netted a close-range strike on 55 minutes to pull one back but the hosts never looked likely to get back into the game and Cottbus it was who advanced to the quarter-finals.
If Steve McClarin survives he will probably be resigned to losing his star Striker Edin Džeko who is reportedly the target of several English Premier League clubs.
