Germany’s demolition of Australia in their opening game had elevated the expectations for this young  team, however they were brought crashing back down by Serbia who snatched a 1-0 win. The refereeing in this game was probably the worst in the finals so far and the sending of of Klose for two innocuous looking fouls pretty much summed up the Spanish Referee’s day. However this is no excuse and this now means that Germany will have to beat Ghana to be in with a chance of maintaining their excellent record of having reached the last 8 of every World Cup Finals since 1938. Serbia can qualify, possibly at Germany’s expense if they beat Australia comfortably in their final match and Ghana hold Germany to a draw. Things will become a bit clearer in this group once Ghana play Australia tomorrow.

Mixed Fortunes For The African Teams on Day 3

Slovenian football (soccer) player Robert Kore...
Image via Wikipedia

Two of Africas 6 representatives in the 2010 World Cup played today, Ghana managed a good win over Serbia while Algeria lost 1-0 to Slovenia who currently top group B.

Algeria 0-1 Slovenia

The goalkeeping errors continued in group B as Algeria’s Faouzi Chaouchi somehow managed to let Robert Koren’s shot slip past him to give Slovenia their victory. Algeria were already down to 10 men thanks to a moment of madness by second half substitute Ghezzal who received a second yellow for a spectacular diving hand ball. It looked a little harsh as he was never going to benefit from the offense and this probably contributed to the Slovenia victory. In truth neither side looked particularly potent and both the USA and England will fancy their chances of beating either of them.

Serbia 0-1 Ghana

Ghana were worthy victors in what was one of the best matches so far in the competition, with some nice flowing football from Ghana and some solid defending from the Serbs as one would expect with a pairing of Vidic and Ivanovic two of the English Premier Leaguse top defenders.

In the Game Ghana dominated for long periods without really looking like making the breakthrough and despite hitting the woodwork twice in the game they had to rely on a late penalty which was confidently dispatched by Asamoah Gyanfor their victory. Serbia were down to 10 men after 74 minutes when Aleksandar Lukovic got his second yellow card. Both teams looked quite capable and although Serbia have a mountain to climb now they will still believe they can qualify in what could be a tight group.

World Cup Warm Up Matches From 5th June 2010

An interesting round of results which pretty much went as expected with Holland again looking like a real threat and Italy struggling to impress. The main injury worry was that of Arjen Robben who limped off with a hamstring injury and now looks like missing out on the group stage games at least. The results were:

Algeria 1-0 United Arab Emirates
A win for Algeria but this form confirms that barring a major slump by their opponents they will be going home after the group stages.

Ghana 1-0 Latvia
Ghana looked less than impressive in beating a poor Latvia team at the MK Stadium. However they did dominate the game and playing in England will be a lot different than playing in Africa with the support of the home nation. They should still at least challenge for a place in the last 16.

Holland 6-1 Hungary
Holland look like the form team going into the finals and although Hungary are not a major force in European football this was still an impressive win. The only black spot in this performance was the possible loss of Arjen Robben who has had a great season both Internationally and at club level. Holland look like possible winners at the moment.

Romania 3-0 Honduras
Honduras looked a bit out of their depth against an admittedly good Romania side and the 3-0 scoreline could have been worse. An early exit looks increasingly likely for the Central American side.

Serbia 4-3 Cameroon
This was a bit of a turn up with the usually defensively sound but goal shy Serbia being involved in a bit of a thriller. Cameroon finally discovered their scoring touch, but looked woeful in defense. Both sides looked much better in this game than of late, but will have to improve quite a bit to progress from the group stages. Of the two Cameroon are the most likely to succeed.  The match highlights are below.

Slovakia 3-0 Costa Rica

Slovakia played really well in this game but the potential loss of Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel who suffered an ankle injury could be a major blow to their last 16 chances. In what is looking an increasingly easy Group F they would have a realistic chance of making the last 16 on this form if they have everyone fit, but with several injury worries now they will have to wait and hope.

South Africa 1-0 Denmark
A goal from Katlego Mphela was enough to maintain South Africa’s 12 match unbeaten run in what was a hard fought game against Denmark. Bafana Bafana have now completed their preparations and will open the World Cup against Mexico on Friday. They have shown a high level of fitness and this could come into play as the group progresses and the final game against France which will be played in the afternoon heat could still be decisive.

Switzerland 1-1 Italy

Yet another poor Italian performance will have the doomsayers excited. However in this case they could have a case, Italy have an ageing squad and lack the star players of old as evidenced by Inter Milan starting the European Champions League Final without a single Italian on the pitch. It is dangerous to write the holders off but they will have to improve on this to trouble the likes of Spain, Brazil or England. Three performances like this and they might not make the last 16. As for Switzerland they look like missing out on the last 16 being in a tough group with Spain & Chile and the loss of one of their top strikers Marco Streller will be a big blow.

USA 3-1 Australia

A good win for the USA who will go into the game against England on a high note thanks to two goals by Edson Buddle which helped finally see of a dogged Australia side. The one worry for the USA in their opening game against England is their lack of a dominant central defender. One would expect Peter Crouch to cause them all sorts of problems when the two sides meet in their group opener.

Australia are in a tough group but with there being some question marks against both Serbia and Ghana they will still fancy their chances of making the last 16 where they could meet England. They have a decent backbone to the team with Lucas Neil in defense, Tim Cahill who is a quality attacking midfielder and Harry Kewell up front and if they can avoid a heavy defeat against Germany they could sneak through on goal difference.

Serbia’s 2010 World Cup 23 Man Squad

Serbia have announced their final 23 man squad for the 2010 World Cup Finals:

Goalkeepers: Vladimir Stojkovic (Sporting), Bojan Isailovic (Zaglebie Lubin), Andjelko Djuricic (Uniao Leiria).

Defenders: Branislav Ivanovic (Chelsea), Antonio Rukavina (1860 Munich), Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United), Neven Subotic (Borussia Dortmund), Aleksandar Lukovic (Udinese), Ivan Obradovic (Zaragoza), Aleksandar Kolarov (Lazio).

Midfielders: Dejan Stankovic (Inter Milan), Gojko Kacar (Hertha Berlin), Nenad Milijas (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Zdravko Kuzmanovic (VfB Stuttgart), Radosav Petrovic (Partizan Belgrade), Milos Krasic (CSKA Moscow), Zoran Tosic (Manchester United), Milos Ninkovic (Dynamo Kiev), Milan Jovanovic (Standard Liege).

Strikers: Nikola Zigic (Birmingham City), Marko Pantelic (Ajax Amsterdam), Danko Lazovic (Zenit St. Petersburg), Dragan Mrdja (Vojvodina Novi Sad).

Looking at the squad they appear fairly solid defensively with Chelseas Branislav Ivanovic & Manchester Uniteds  Nemanja Vidic both being amongst the best in the Premire League.  However they look likely to struggle to score goals with this forward line and the midfield dosent look like being able to pick up the slack. They should be quite hard to beat but an early exit looks on the cards.

Rep of Ireland 3-0 Algeria
Not a good result for Algeria who look likely to struggle in the group stages on this showing. Ireland who were unlucky not to be in the finals themselves have now beaten two World Cup teams in their last two games and will start their European Championship qualifying campaign in good heart.

Hungary 0-3 Germany
A comfortable win for Germany who on this form should take Group D without too much trouble – not much else to say here.

New Zealand 1-0 Serbia
A great win for New Zealand who shocked the world no 15 ranked Serbs thanks to a nicely worked goal by Shane Smeltz in the 22nd minute. This didn’t go down well with the Serbian element of the 14,000 crowd who proceeded to cause a bit of trouble throwing flares andother objects onto the pitch. Although you cant read too much into a warm up friendly match on this showing Serbia will struggle to justify their second favourites ranking and Ghana despite the fact they will be missing Essien look a good bet to take the second qualifying place in Group D.

Slovakia 1-1 Cameroon
Slovakia will be quietly confident of making a respectable World Cup Debut after holding the Indomitable Lions to a draw in Klagenfurt, Austria. In a group where all the attention will be on Italy and Paraguay they remain probably 3rd choice, but they should go home without being embarrassed. Cameroon will be very worried about their lack of firepower andthis could be telling as goal difference or even goals scored could decide who joins Holland in the last 16 from Group E

Spain 3-2 Saudi Arabia

Spain started this game witha near full strength squad including players of the caliber of Casillas, Puyol, Pique, Xavi, Alonso, Iniesta & Villa probably expecting a comfortable victory. However that’s not how things turned out and they looked very ordinary in scraping this narrow win. They have a couple more warm up matches left but will have to show a whole lot more than this if they are to lift the trophy for the first time in South Africa.

USA 2-1 Turkey

The USA had to come from behind to win this game but in doing so showed a lot of character and tactical awareness which will stand them in good stead in the finals. Group C should be very interesting with only Algeria looking like whipping boys.

Belarus 1-0 South Korea

A very disappointing result for South Korea in light of their excellent wins over Equador and Japan in their previous games. However Belarus are not a pushover for any tam and this could just be a blip in form. They face Spain on June 3rd and this will give us a lot more idea about their chances.

Chile 1-0 Northern Ireland

A near second string Chile won a pretty insignificant match against Northern Ireland thanks to some good goalkeeping and a well taken goal by Colo Colo Midfielder Esteben Paredes. They have a match against Israel coming up and they will probably field a team closer to their starting eleven in that.

Japan 1-2 England

Inept is probably the kindest way to describe Englands performance against a plucky Japan side who will feel a trifle unlucky. Trailing 1-0 at half time England had to rely on two Japan own goals for the narrow win and the usually dependable Frank Lampard missed his second consecutive penalty which ironically is probably a good thing as he will never miss three in a row. The good news for England is that they have now managed to beat two fellow World Cup contenders while playing poorly. If they get it right and play to their full potential then they will go a long way in the finals. However if they reproduce this sort of form in the Finals they could go out in the group stages and wont get past the last 16.

Mexico 5-1 Gambia
An easy win for Mexico who look a good team in going forward but their shakydefense was still evident. If they can learn to defend set pieces they could surprise a few teams this year.

Nigeria 1-1 Colombia

Not an overly impressive performance by Nigeria who may not have been ideally suited by the playing conditions at the MK Stadium. An early exit looks on the cards for the Super Eagles in 2010.

Paraguay 2-2 Ivory Coast

A hugely entertaining encounter between two teams who have their sights firmly set on a place in the last 16 at least. Overall The Ivory Coast looked the better team and Paraguay had Aureliano Torres to thank for their draw when he struck from a free kick in the 90th minute.

Tunisia 1-1 France

A crowd of around55,000 watched Tunisia pile the pressure on France coach Raymond Domenech following another disappointing performance. Tunisia took the lead in a first half more notable for the pitch invasion by a cat than the standard of the football. It took France until the 62nd minute for France to equalise and when it came it was defender Wiliam Gallas who snatched the goal. Group A is starting to look very interesting and the French will be hoping that they don’t repeat their ignominious exit of 2002.

World Cup 2010 Group D Preview

Group D – Germany, Serbia, Australia, Ghana

In what looks one of the tighter groups Germany will be a strong favourite to advance and will probably be group winners. All the other group teams are in with a chance and this is reflected in their high FIFA rankings.

Germany have a terrific record in World Cup Tournaments having won the final three times (2 as West Germany) and appearing in the final on 4 other occasions. They almost invariably reach the quarter finals and look in good form having come through a reasonably strong qualifying group without losing a game.  Most of their squad are household names in Europe and they are currently amongst the favourites to win the Tournament outright. It would be one of the shocks of the tournament if they don’t qualify.
